Strengths: Super IP based Camera. For the money, you'll not find a better, easier to install IP Camera.
Weaknesses: No built in audio, no buit in wireless.
Summary: I own over a dozen Dlink IP based cameras, ranging in price from the DCS-900 to the DCS-6620G. Without any doubt, this camera is the best bang for the buck. Because if it's low price and easy of installation, I can very highly suggest this camera as your first IP camera or as a low cost supplement to your existing system. Currently supported by the latest version of Dlink's own DViewCam software (version 1.4 at the time of this review), the current version of this camera has a sensor that produces excellent images, even in marginally low light. If you're looking for the best possible image in very low light, along with excellent wireless connectivity and a bounty of other features, then you should consider the DCS-6620G, but be prepared for a much higher price tag.

NOTE: Always check support.dlink.com for the latest firmware before installing your camera.

Strengths: I put all 11 cameras in one html page and remotely monitor our properties, from anywhere in the world; see at a glance all 11 cameras. Bought more expensive models but could not put in one html page.
Weaknesses: Camera angle is only 45 degrees and can't see in dark. We put fluorescent lighting near cameras, and they works great, inside or outside.
Summary: I love this particular d-link 900 model more than the more expensive wireless 900W model; I have two 900W models I bought about seven years ago, and never could get the wireless feature to work well.

Strengths: built in server so no computer is required, inexpensive
Weaknesses: no pan/tilt, poor is low light
Summary: There are often rebates on this product which makes the price very attractive. Don't confuse this with cheap USB webcams. It has a built in server that allows operation without a computer present.

Works great for monitoring the house or anything else remotely. However, don't count on using it in low light conditions.

It comes with some software that will put the screens from up to four DCS-900 cameras together into one screen.

Mounting bracket provides a lot of flexibility, but AC source cannot be very far away.

Strengths: decent quality picture
Weaknesses: its just a cmos camera so cant get all that high quality stuff
Summary: overall sharp picture and not major weakness... takes a little extra time from sleep mode but that could be due to my computer slowness....have to test with a fast computer....fairly compact in size...

Strengths: Cheap, reasonably well made. Works well over longer-than-USB cables, including with Linux.
Weaknesses: Narrow field of view (although not worse than others). High noise levels even in moderate light, poor sensitivity. Runs hotter than you'd expect.
Summary: I need to feed a bunch of live camera views a modest distance to computers running Linux. USB cameras are cheap, but it is hard to figure-out which ones work with Linux and long USB cables are a problem. The protocols used by network cameras are usually more straightforward, so support is easier. Grabbing a frame is just 192.168.0.20/IMAGE.JPG... using the DCS-900 default address. However, the frame rate sustained that way is pretty low. There is a free little program called mcamip that grabs frames at a better rate, about 7 per sec at 640x480. At 320x240 frame rates are high enough for good motion fusion (e.g., ~20 FPS). I've tested two cameras extensively, and the only glitches I've seen are occassional burps in the frame rate, which have been pretty rare.

Configuration is trivial, but annoying in that many folks have the local network addresses as 192.168.1.*, in which case you'll need to temporarily change a computer's network address or mask to put it on the same subnet so you can tell the DCS-900 to use your subnet (e.g., 192.168.1.20 instead of 192.168.0.20) via the nice hmtl browser interface. After that, switch your machine back and all should be well.

The relatively high image noise levels seem to be largely a sensor defect -- like many webcams, most noise is in a fixed pattern that you actually can remove in software by doing a modified form of "dark frame subtraction." Anyway, the image quality is pretty typical of 640x480 webcams even without fancy postprocessing.

I have tried fitting cheap wide-angle/fisheye adapter lenses to the camera, and they work fine, but the lens does not have any mount for them. Fortunately, the focus ring is large enough that you can kludge a mount without making it impossible to focus the camera.

Overall, a pretty friendly camera for use with Linux.

3 Star ReviewD-Link DCS-900
Strengths: Built in web server
Weaknesses: Grainy image; low frame rate; no sound; difficult to set up for remote viewing
Summary: After spending several days trying to access to the camera from a remote location without any success, I found out that the SBC DSL modem has a built in router and firewall which prevented that from happening. After resetting the Speedstream modem to a passive mode and use the router to log on to the dsl service using PPPoE instead of dynamic, I still have not been able to view the camera from off site. As such, I would have to figure this out when I have some free time since the included manual is almost useless. D-Link DCS-900 is an economical web base security camera but it might be a bit difficult to set up for remote access.

Strengths: Never Freezes, no need to restart, very reliable, works well behind any router/firewall capable of virtual port forwarding so you dont need to change the router.
Weaknesses: None. For this price what else would you get :)
Summary: If you want to use direct with your dsl modem go ahead cuz it works with many dns services so no extra expense for static ip address. Works cool with some Power Over Ethernet Modules so no extra expenes to install power outlet.

Strengths: Price, ease of installation
Weaknesses: Size, ugly
Summary: I purchased this camera because I needed a web came fast and when I took it out of the box I was very disappointed in the way it looked. It was large and ugly. I wish D-link would take some lessons from apple's iSight camera and imprive this one. But then again the I sight costs 2 times as much as this one did. The picture quality was good and it was a breeze to setup the camera and get it going.
